Hawaii weddingLast year I attended my cousin’s wedding in Hawaii and everything was great.  He and his wife were married in a church made entirely of Koa wood.  The reception, however, is where there was a bit of a stumble.  Culturally, the Hawaiian diet involves a lot of meat and while my cousin’s wife’s family was able to dictate the food selection in that respect (as they are native islanders), my family and I were left dinner-less as we are vegetarians.

A Hawaiian wedding was beautiful enough, and I did not want to ruin anybody’s time with my dietary habits.  I was able to rebuff hunger by assembling my own dinner plate which was made up of fruits.  While it seemed less exotic than the majestic piles of pork that was on everybody else’s plates, it worked out until the end of the wedding when I was able to find a Zippy’s and eat a veggie burger.

As much as I wanted to complain about the lack of vegetarian alternatives, the fact of the matter is that they spent a fortune to have a dream wedding and since a majority of the guests were the bride’s family and friends – all of whom were not vegetarians – it seemed a bit silly to throw a fit over the food preferences of a few scattered people.  Make the most of what’s given to you and, when in doubt, there’s always a veggie burger a few minutes from wherever you are.
